Overview

High-frequency microwave pulses travel along a cable or rod probe. Where the probe meets the measured medium the change in dielectric constant reflects part of the pulse back, and the interval between the transmitted and reflected pulse is proportional to the distance to the surface. Six probe configurations cover liquids, powders, high temperature and pressure, corrosive media and low dielectric constants.

Operating principle

  1. 01The probe emits high-frequency pulses that propagate along a cable-type or rod-type probe. When the pulses reach the material surface they are reflected and received by the instrument, which converts the distance signal into a level signal.
  2. 02The distance D to the material surface is proportional to the pulse travel time T: D = C × T / 2, where C is the speed of light. Because the empty-tank distance E is known, the level L is L = E − D.
  3. 03Entering the empty-tank height E (zero point) and full-tank height F (full range) with the application parameters lets the instrument adjust itself; the measurement corresponds to a 4–20 mA output.
  4. 04EchoDiscovery echo processing with the instrument microprocessor identifies the echo generated at the material surface so the gauge can be deployed in complex operating conditions.

Installation

Guidance from the product’s operating documentation.

  1. 01Keep the cable or rod clear of internal obstacles across the whole measuring range — ladders, limit switches, heating equipment and supports — and keep it out of the feeding material flow.
  2. 02Install away from discharge and inlet ports. For a hopper, install at 1/4 or 1/6 of the hopper diameter. Minimum distance from the wall is 1/10 of the measuring range.
  3. 03Minimum distance from probe to tank wall ≥300 mm. Bottom of the probe at least 30 mm from the tank bottom. Minimum distance to any obstacle inside the tank ≥200 mm.
  4. 04Threaded joints: thread length not exceeding 15 mm. For 2″–6″ mounting pipes keep pipe height ≤100 mm. For DN200 or DN250 short pipes a special flange with a horn interface must be selected, otherwise echoes form on the pipe inner wall.
  5. 05On plastic containers the process connection surface must be metal: use a metal flange, or provide a metal plate where a threaded connection is used.
  6. 06The rod probe has a maximum length of 6 m. Beyond that, select a 4 mm cable probe. In a guided-wave tube with a cable probe the tube diameter must be ≥6 inches (DN150).
